Sydney was born in 1882 in Leeds, one of 8 children to James and Lizzie who in 1901 were all living in Thornton le Clay where James was the Station Master & Sub Postmaster. Sydney, like his younger brother Thomas Edson were both Railway Clerks. In 1911 Sydney was working in York and living as a lodgr at 23 St Olaves Road in the town. During the war Sidney (as found on some sources, served as a 2/Lt in the Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regt.,). He was KIA on 9 October 1917 and is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing |

| Cyril Goodwill | R I P | Cyril was born in Whitby in 1888, the son of Nathan and Constance who in 1901 were living in York, where Nathan worked as a railway clerk. In 1911 Cyril was also working for the NER as a railway clerk and he lived with his parents and brother Ronald at 24 Claremont Terrace, York. Cyril served in the West Yorkshire Regt., as a 2/Lt and was KIA on 3 september 1916 aged 29. He rests in Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval. By the time of the war Cyril had married Mabel Emily and lived at Springfield Cottage, Swann St, York. |

| Matthew Hill | R I P | Possibly - Matthew Hill was born in Whitby in 1899, the brother of Norman, below. I can find no records saying where or when he died |
| Norman Hill | R I P | Norman Hill was born in Whitby in 1897, the son of John and Alice who in 1901 lived at Loggerhead Yard. John worked as a gas stoker at the gas works to feed his young family of 7. By the end of the war they lived at Wards Yard, Baxtergate in Whitby. Norman enlisted in West Hartlepool, joining the RGA as Gnr 337643. He died on 18 March 1918 aged 23 and he rests in Tincourt New British Cemetery. |

| Harry Lawson | R I P | Harry or Henry Lawson as found in some records was born in Fylingdales, Whitby the son of Elizabeth Lawson and her husband. In the 1901 census there was just Elizabeth and Henry in the house in The Bolts, Fylingdales. Henry served as Gdsn 17936 and was KIA between 14 and 17 September 1916. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing with others whose final resting place is known only unto their god |

| Matthew Raw | Matthew Barry Raw was possibly the son of Matthew and Eleanor Raw, born in Whitby in 1877 and in 1881 living in Hawsker cum Stainsacre. Matthew snr worked as an Iron Worker, but in the 1891 census Eleanor was a widow still living in Hawsker with her 5 children. By 1901 the family are back in Whitby - Eleanor is a Bank Caretaker with 4 of her children with her by now aged between 19 and 33. Matthew served in the RASC as Driver T260665. Being eligible for the British and Victory Medals. | |

| Reginald Smales | Reginald was the younger brother to Lewis, being 14 years old in 1901. He served in the Northumberland Fusiliers as first a Lieutenant, then a Cipher Officer with the rank of Captain. He served in Eastern Persia and Afghanistan with the British and Victory Medals | |

By 1901 Joseph was a widower living on Windson Terrace, still working as a Jet Manuracturer with 8 children, 1 daughter in law living with him. Stephen was aged 14 and a printers apprentice. | |
